Playing without its ineligible center Fab Melo, Syracuse tiptoed along the precipice of history, narrowly avoiding the ignominy of becoming the first men's top seed to lose to a No. 16. The Orange trailed for much of the game, were tied with the Bulldogs with just under seven minutes remaining and struggled to finish off a taut 72-65 victory. The Syracuse victory pushed top seeds to 109-0 since the tournament expanded to 64 teams in the 1980s but did little to dispel the notion that the North Carolina-Asheville team is in turmoil. Kentucky 81, W. Kentucky 66: The 6-foot-9 sophomore Terrence Jones scored 22 points on 9 of 13 shooting from the field. The 6-foot-10 freshman forward Anthony Davis had 16 points, 9 rebounds and 7 blocked shots. The sophomore swingman Doron Lamb had 16 points and the freshman point guard Marquis Teague had 12 points and 4 assists. The Hilltoppers were led by T. J. Price with 21 points. Baylor 68, SDSU 60: The South Dakota State Jackrabbits jumped out to a 12-point lead early and then fought back from a double-digit deficit themselves in the closing minutes before falling to Baylor Bears. Pierre Jackson (18 points) and Brady Heslip (17) both sank two free throws in the final 23 seconds after the Jackrabbits had pulled to 64-60 and Brayden Carlson misfired a 3-pointer that would have made it a one-point game. New Mexico 75, Long Beach State 68: Kendall Williams scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half and bottled up Long Beach State star Casper Ware defensively to help fifth-seeded New Mexico hold on for victory.
