Close the door on the Russians
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 10 - 03 - 2012

The international community must face Russia squarely. The Kremlin's support for the Syrian regime has become unbearable. All diplomatic channels have been used to make Russia change its mind but it has remained adamant. The Arabs have been patient and calm in dealing with Moscow's position on the Syrian crisis.
In the near future, Russia will not find any supporters in the region once the Syrian regime, which the Kremlin has been supplying with arms, has collapsed. Although the Syrian people's struggle to topple the government of Bashar Al-Assad has been difficult, there is no doubt that they will triumph in the end. Justice always prevails over tyranny.
Beyond opposing the world with its veto of the Arab-supported UN Security Council resolution condemning the Syrian regime's atrocities, Moscow has gone further with false allegations against countries supporting the cause of the Syrian people. It is likely to make such allegations against any country which supports the Syrian people's struggle to form a new government to look after their welfare.
The statement of the Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs which accused the Kingdom of supporting terrorism in Syria was not only undiplomatic but it also proves that Moscow will reward criminals and thugs who are killing innocent people as long as this serves Russia's vested interest. Compassion, fairness and reason are human values that do not seem to have any meaning for the Kremlin.
Russia's undiplomatic statement came right after Putin won his country's presidential election, a victory which makes him president for the second time, amid allegations of fraud and manipulations. Russia should bear in mind that truth, justice, fairness and reason always triumph in the end. It should learn the lesson from its own history that belligerency and military might are not the way to win approval. Only right values and attitude can win the hearts of people and countries.
With Russia's unreasonable position on the Syrian crisis, it is important for us to call off any meeting with the Russians to relay our anger and disapproval of Moscow's inhumane support for the Syrian regime which has resorted to the killing of innocent people just to stay in power. __
