Some motorists here, particularly young men, are installing imported electronic devices on their cars which they claim can detect and warn them about Saher cameras 200 to 1,000 meters ahead on a road. These devices are being sold secretly by some car accessory shops, reported Al-Watan newspaper on Friday. Ahmad Z., a young motorist, purchased such a device from a seller in the Eastern Province and installed it on his windscreen. He said it warns the driver in three ways, with a beep, a flashing light or a written alert. He said it costs between SR600 to SR1,000 and is small enough to be hidden anywhere in the car. It can be mobile or fixed. He said he has not received a traffic fine since installing the device. Bandar Al-Otaibi, a Saudi national, said these devices are not the only way to detect Saher cameras. Some applications on smartphones and sophisticated car navigation systems can also easily detect Saher cameras after special programming. He said he has seen such systems himself and is convinced of their effectiveness. In earlier statements to the press, several Saher officials confirmed the existence of such devices but said they are easily countered by preventing the detection of Saher codes. Meanwhile, several users of such devices have confirmed their effectiveness. Some motorists have even uploaded videos on YouTube and other websites to prove that they work.
