Florian Mayer of Germany defeated Facundo Bagnis of Argentina 6-2, 6-4 to advance to the second round of the Mexican Open Monday. The fifth-seeded Mayer took advantage of seven aces to get past Bagnis in just over an hour at The Fairmont Acapulco Princess. Mayer had four break opportunities and converted on three of them. Also advancing was No. 7 seed Marcel Granollers of Spain, who defeated Brazil's Thomaz Bellucci 6-4, 6-2. Potito Starace beat Alessandro Giannessi 6-2, 7-5 in an all-Italian encounter, while Pablo Andujar of Spain ousted Leonardo Mayer of Argentina, 7-6 (5), 6-3. On the women's side, Melinda Czink of Hungary beat Canada's Stephanie Dubois 7-6 (6), 6-3, while Stephanie Foretz Gacon defeated fellow Frenchwoman Mathilde Johansson 6-4, 7-6 (5). The Mexican Open is the fourth ATP Tour 500 tournament of the season. Nine of the Top-30 men in the world are playing, including top-seeded and two-time defending champion David Ferrer, the sixth-ranked Spaniard who won last week's Copa Claro in Argentina. Roddick optimistic Andy Roddick is hoping to turn around a dismal season so far at the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships. The fourth-seeded Roddick is battling injuries. He will face Philipp Petzschner of Germany in a first-round match. “Honestly, I'm not as concerned with the ranking,” Roddick said. “I just want to get into a flow again rather than some days on, some days off. I just want to play continuously for a while.” In an all-American first-round match Monday, Ryan Sweeting swept Donald Young 6-1, 6-1 on a windy day near the beach. Sweeting never offered Young a break point opportunity in the 52-minute match. He also won 21 of 23 first serve points that went in play. Young struggled with his serve and was broken on four of nine break points he presented to Sweeting. “It was quicker than I expected and I don't think Donald played his best tennis today at all,” Sweeting said. In other first-round matches, Dudi Sela of Israel defeated American wild card Denis Kudla 6-4, 6-3 and Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan defeated Matthew Ebden of Australia 6-2, 6-3.
