The Syrian regime has played a cruel joke on its own people and the world. It thinks that the Syrian protesters will fall for the trick of amending the country's constitution. The whole thing is a charade aimed at giving Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad more time to stay in power and to break the will of the people. The Syrian regime said on Monday that 90 percent of Syrians voted for amending the constitution. How can the Syrian people vote for constitutional amendments or for drafting a new charter when there is no stability in the country and the people have no freedom to cast their votes? Al-Assad and his advisers from the Al-Baath Party do not seem to understand what a constitution is and what the guiding principles are on which constitutional provisions are based. Were the people represented in the so-called vote on constitutional amendments? Of course, the answer is no. The Syrian regime chose to ignore the circumstances in Syria when it held the mock referendum. The move was patently designed to deceive not only the Syrian people but also the entire world. The mock plebiscite showed that Al-Assad's regime has become desperate. It thinks that it can play a joke on the Syrian people and the world community. If the Syrian regime thinks that the joke will appease the protesters and the world, it is badly mistaken. The world community should continue to support the cause of the Syrian people to form a new government which will look after their welfare. More pressure should also be put on Russia and China to make them change their irrational support for the discredited Al-Assad regime. The regime has lost its legitimacy because it has become obvious that it has no concern for Syrians as a people and a nation. __
