Okaz/Saudi Gazette RIYADH — Housewives are seen selling food on the streets of Riyadh since the start of Ramadan braving the summer heat. Umm Salih said she does not care how hot it is and she will stand under the seething sun to sell her food. "I stand here by my stall every day from 5 p.m. to 12:00 midnight. I sell traditional dishes such as Al-Jiraish, Al-Qursan, Al-Kushari, southern bread, samosas and different kinds of juices. I get requests from Saudi and non-Saudi families alike," said Umm Salih. Umm Fahd said she will not wait for the social security allowance and will take to the streets to make a living for herself. "The heat is sometimes 45 degrees but I am not ashamed to be making my own money. I have a special menu for Ramadan. Everyone likes Al-Jiraish and the samosas. My prices are perfectly reasonable for the hard labor I have to put in. All of my food is handmade by me," said Umm Fahd. Umm Mohammad said she has been making homemade dishes and desert for over 10 years. "I started off by selling my dishes to relatives and friends. Slowly, my customer base grew. I earn an income of about SR4,000 to SR6,000 a month," said Umm Mohammad. Umm Hasan said she specialized in making Luqmat Al-Qadi and Arabic coffee. "I make about SR3,500 working in Ramadan. I get a lot of inquiries as my dishes are seasonal to the fasting month," said Umm Hasan.
