Only combined efforts of individuals and the community can counter the scourge of drug abuse in the Kingdom, said Prince Misha'l Bin Majed Bin Abdul Aziz, Governor of Jeddah. The governor was speaking here recently at the launch of a program entitled, “Partners in fighting the dangers of narcotics”, an initiative of the Anti-Narcotics Administration of the Ministry of Interior. Prince Misha'l, the Honorary President of the program, lauded the public awareness programs of the Ministry of Interior. He highlighted the negative socio-economic impact of narcotics on society. He said drugs can destroy individuals and society and threaten the development of the Muslim Ummah. He said awareness and education programs are crucial in helping to inform people about the dangers of taking drugs. These programs require social partnerships and are a national responsibility. Prince Misha'l said the traditional methods of enlightening the public about the harmful effects of narcotics are no longer effective, considering the massive developments in telecommunications and information technology. He said the anti-drug message must be taken to the youth through these new media and information platforms. He emphasized that the current program will continue throughout the year and includes several activities and scientific symposia. He said the program will outline details of a plan to protect the youth and the role to be played by social and education institutions. Prince Misha'l said drug abuse affects family members and society at large. Drug addicts can be very aggressive and manipulative, which results in family members suffering from depression and other mental and physical problems. He said addicts are consequently shunned by their own families and their communities. He said studies have shown that there is a direct relationship between drugs and family problems, including high rates of divorce, family violence and suicide. He said these studies also show that there is a close link between drugs, crime and unemployment. He said drug abuse drains the national economy of a country. “I do believe joint efforts will ensure society can successfully eradicate this menace.” Prince Misha'l called on parents to try to get treatment for their children if they become addicted to drugs. Parents must be vigilant and watch their children to see if there are any radical changes in their behavior, he said.
