Saudi Gazette The city of Dubai is making sure its public spaces are more inclusive and friendly to those with disabilities, by making these spaces easily accessible and by opting for a better use of words and changing labels. The government of Dubai is installing new signs on seven of the city's beaches that address those with physical disabilities in a more positive way. Most signs read ‘disability access', pointing out ramps designated for those in wheelchairs or on crutches, but the new signs in Dubai now read ‘beach access for people of determination'. The ruler of Dubai himself, H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, recently that he would like people with disabilities in Dubai to be referred to as people of determination. This move is not only about words, but real action to make the society more inclusive and receptive to those with physical challenges is also being set into motion. Dubai has developed a program which plansto make Dubai a fully disability-friendly city, from access to employment opportunities, by 2020.
