Belgian Steve Darcis upset Czech fourth seed Radek Stepanek 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-2) Thursday to reach the quarterfinals of the $531,000 ATP San Jose Open. Darcis, ranked 72nd in the world, will next face French fifth seed Julien Benneteau, who ousted Luxembourg's Gilles Muller 6-2, 6-4 in another second-round match at the indoor hardcourt event. American prospect Ryan Harrison saved two match points before storming through a third-set tiebreaker to reach the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 victory over compatriot Robbie Ginepri Thursday. The 19-year-old world No. 94 saved the match points in the 12th game of the deciding set before racing through the subsequent tiebreak 7-0 against his vastly more experienced opponent. Harrison struggled to hold serve in the opening game but soon found his rhythm to break Ginepri immediately as he dominated the first set. The 29-year-old Ginepri rallied to take the second set 6-2 and both players held firm in the decider until the younger man pulled clear in the closing stages. Harrison will next face Bulgarian Dimitar Kutrovsky, a 7-5, 6-3 winner over American lucky loser Blake Strode. In the final match of the day, Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan eased to a 6-2, 6-2 victory over American Michael Russell to set up a quarterfinal showdown against second seed and triple San Jose champion Andy Roddick. In the other early match, sixth seeded South African Kevin Anderson dispatched Australian Matthew Ebden 6-1, 6-2 and advanced to face defending champion Milos Raonic. Berdych in semis Tomas Berdych took his indoor record to an unblemished 8-0 this season as the Czech overpowered Italy's Andreas Seppi 6-3, 6-4 Friday to reach the semi-finals of the ATP Rotterdam Open. But the second-seeded perfectionist was slightly annoyed after losing serve for the only time in the match in the second set, a mistake which he quickly rectified to get the contest back on level-pegging. Berdych will on Saturday face off against third seed and tournament debutant Juan Martin Del Potro, who hammered Serb seventh seed Viktor Troicki, 6-0, 6-1 in just over an hour.
