Yankees edge Cubs for a three-game sweep
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 09 - 05 - 2017

Aaron Hicks led off the 18th inning with a bunt single and scored on a grounder as the New York Yankees edged the Chicago Cubs 5-4 in a 6-hour, 5-minute game that ended early on Monday morning. By winning the longest interleague game in terms of innings, the Yankees completed a three-game sweep.
The teams combined for a major-league-record 48 strikeouts. The previous record was 43, set by the California Angels and Oakland A's on July 9, 1971, in a 20-inning game.
After he bunted, Hicks advanced on catcher Willson Contreras' throwing error and moved to third on a sacrifice before he scored when Starlin Castro hit a grounder to shortstop Addison Russell, who threw wide of home.
The Yankees set franchise records for most strikeouts by batters (22) and pitchers (26), and the Cubs set a franchise record for most strikeouts by hitters (26).
A's 8, Tigers 6
Ryon Healy hit a two-run, walk-off homer, lifting Oakland past Detroit. The A's beat closer Francisco Rodriguez (1-4) for the second straight day.
Mariners 4, Rangers 3
Kyle Seager homered in the eighth inning to complete Seattle's come-from-behind win over Texas at Safeco Field. Edwin Diaz pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to post his sixth save.
Astros 5, Angels 3
Houston won a battle of the bombs at Angel Stadium, with Jose Altuve hitting a three-run shot in a four-run third inning and Evan Gattis going deep to start the seventh against Los Angeles. The Astros won two of three games against the Angels for their eighth series win this season. The Angels lost for the fourth time in five games.
Cardinals 6, Braves 4 (14 innings)
Tommy Pham went 4-for-5 and hit two home runs, including a two-run shot in the 14th inning, to lift St. Louis over Atlanta at Sun Trust Park. The go-ahead homer came in against Josh Collmenter (0-1) and scored Magneuris Sierra, who reached on an error. Pham had three RBIs, two runs and a stolen base.
Red Sox 17, Twins 6
Boston scored 10 runs in the ninth inning after Minnesota closed within one run in the eighth and pulled away for the win at Target Field. Boston starter Chris Sale struck out 10 batters, but the pitching duel with Ervin Santana never materialized as the Red Sox hit five home runs.
Indians 1, Royals 0
Mike Clevinger and four Cleveland relievers combined for a one-hitter against Kansas City. Clevinger (1-0) struck out five and walked four in 5 2/3 innings before manager Terry Francona went to his bullpen to protect the one-run lead. Salvador Perez's fourth-inning double was the lone Kansas City hit.
Phillies 6, Nationals 5 (10 innings)
Aaron Altherr a pinch-hit, three-run homer o even the score in the bottom of the eighth inning and Philadelphia beat Washington in the 10th on a walk-off sacrifice fly by Freddy Galvis. Galvis finished the day with three RBIs. The Phillies snapped a five-game losing streak and halted a four-game win streak for the Nationals.
Reds 4, Giants 0
Scott Schebler and Zack Cozart homered, and Scott Feldman tossed his third career shutout, lifting Cincinnati to a three-game sweep of San Francisco at Great American Ball Park. Feldman (2-3) allowed four hits with a walk and five strikeouts for his fifth career complete game. His last shutout came on Aug. 30, 2014, versus the Texas Rangers while he was a member of the Houston Astros.
Rockies 5, Diamondbacks 2
A brilliant start from Tyler Chatwood and home runs from Mark Reynolds, Pat Valaika and Charlie Blackmon enabled Colorado to beat Arizona in the rubber game of the series. Coming off losses in his past two starts, Chatwood (3-4) allowed two singles and one run in seven innings with three walks and five strikeouts.
Blue Jays 2, Rays 1
Five relievers combined to hold Tampa Bay to three hits and Toronto got a solo home run from Darwin Barney in the eighth inning at Tropicana Field. The Rays' lack of offense spoiled a solid outing by starter Alex Cobb (2-2), who gave up four hits in eight innings.
Orioles 4, White Sox 0
Chris Tillman threw five innings of three-hit ball in his season debut and Baltimore completed a three-game sweep of Chicago and posted its fourth straight win.
Marlins 7, Mets 0
Jose Urena teamed up with three relievers on a one-hitter and Giancarlo Stanton launched two long homers as Miami routed New York. The victory ended a three-game losing streak for the Marlins. The loss capped a distraction-filled day for the Mets. New York announced before the game that right-hander Matt Harvey — Sunday's scheduled starter — was suspended three days without pay for a violation of team rules.
Brewers 6, Pirates 2
Held to one run in the first two games of a three-game series at PNC Park, Milwaukee broke out the bats in a win over Pittsburgh as Jesus Aguilar contributed an RBI double and a solo home run. Eric Thames went 3-for-4 with a double and a home run, his 12th of the season, and two RBIs.
Padres-Dodgers, postponed.
The game between Los Angeles and San Diego was postponed by heavy rain — just the third rainout since the Padres moved into Petco Park in 2004. The game was rescheduled for Sept. 2 as part of a day-night doubleheader. — Reuters
