Okaz/Saudi Gazette JEDDAH – The Waziriya residential district south of Jeddah has become prematurely worn out with cracks and wrinkles appearing on its face. The surfacing of sewage water has destroyed its roads and streets while stagnant swamps produce mosquitoes and spread nasty odor. "Waziriya is just 20 years old but its present condition is pathetic," said Maj. Gen. Saleh Sunbul, a resident of the district. He urged authorities to take immediate action for the overall development of Waziriya and improve its road and sewage systems. He warned authorities that the surfacing of sewage water would not only affect the district's streets but also its high-rise buildings and environment. Citizens have blamed the National Water Company for Waziriya's worsening condition as it did not construct a sewage network for the district. Sunbul said sewage water has damaged the district's roads and created several potholes, threatening the safety of vehicles. "It's high time that the district should be provided with modern living facilities for the welfare and safety of its residents," he told Okaz/Saudi Gazette. "Waziriya has started getting old, although it was established a few years ago," he added. Fawaz Abusabae said the district lacked basic services. "We have constructed huge buildings in the district, which lacks basic facilities. Sewage water is a major problem in Waziriya. Accumulation of garbage along streets is another major issue," he added. He said Waziriya has been hit by old age as a result of authorities' long negligence. "Hope authorities would realize the mistake and do the needful to improve the district's condition without wasting more time and before things get out of control," he said. Abdullah Hamza also expressed his deep concern over the district's deteriorating condition. "It was established as a model district but a number of disorganized buildings have been constructed, tarnishing its image," he said and blamed authorities for damaging its environment. Fawaz Muhiyuddin complained about the spread of sewage water on Waziriya's roads. "You can see a large number of illegal foreign workers engage in illicit activities including collection of old metals and worn out car spare parts." He urged the Jeddah Municipality and National Water Company to take quick action for the district's development and improve its living condition.
