Get yourself moving
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 16 - 02 - 2012

After two weeks of focusing on all mouth-watering goodies, it's now time to get yourself moving to burn off all that junk food you must have piled on.
It's not only adults who need to exercise, children like you to need to do some sort of physical activity to stay in shape, and above all be active.
Research shows that that children who are physically active perform better in school. You can excel in school too, if you let out all that stored up energy. You spend most of your time sitting at home or at school, doing schoolwork, homework, watching TV, sitting on the Internet, etc. Moreover, the only source of entertainment we have over here is fine dining, which we enjoy a lot, but then who doesn't? So, now, why not do some running and jumping?
Physical fitness trainer, Saba Ahmed said that five amusements for children to help them get moving are:
Swimming
The best form of exercise for your mind and body. There are lots of clubs around here, which have swimming pools for kids. Find one in your area, make sure it's clean and well equipped, and enroll yourself there. Hit the pool every alternate day and you will be as swift as a fish. It also helps in increasing one's height.
Hula hoops
Perhaps, the oldest, cheapest and easiest form of exercise. Put on your favorite music and wiggle your body to those fast rocking numbers. It requires little space and you can find it in any good sports shop.Skipping
It is also amongst the most easiest exercises as it helps children improve co-ordination between hand and eye and rhythm, apart from being simple and fun. It is also an ideal form of exercise to build stamina as most athletes prefer doing it before running. Nintendo Wii or Kinect Sports Xbox360
For all those gaming aficionados, this is perfect treat for you. You can play a variety of games on it, that is from tennis to badminton to basketball, to racing, they have a whole lot of games which will keep you on your feet for a good hour or two. It's also a great family game.
Trampoline
This is also one of the most safest and effective form of exercise. Most children love jumping and what better way could it be than to jump on the trampoline. Time just goes by when jumping on it, without even realizing that you just went through an energetic workout. This workout is also known for strengthening the heart and building up stamina.
So, go ahead and try to choose at least one of the above and include it in your daily routine. “Children should at least indulge for two hours in physical activities to refresh themselves. If not then definitely one hour. If any form of exercise is not possible or if they are feeling lazy, then parents should take their children out for a walk,” said Ahmed. She further said that exercise helps in keeping a healthy weight, bones, and muscles. It also helps a child sleep better at night. A healthy and nutritious diet will add to the wonders of the regime. “Children should not skip breakfast. Those who do so can be easily identified in the class as they feel sleepy, concentrate less in class, and are lethargic. Mothers should lovingly encourage children to eat breakfast as it is the most healthy meal of the day,” said Ahmed.
