Performing the Domestic: Feminism and Labor in Art: Farah Al Qasimi in Conversation with May Al-Dabbagh
Farah Al Qasimi spoke to May Al-Dabbagh, Assistant Professor of Social Research and Public Policy at NYUAD, in relation to her ongoing commission in The Yard by Alserkal Avenue Programming Commission. They discussed the invisible labor of women in the cycle of creation and consumption, through the mediums of photography, performance and video.
RTL:LTR |Isfahan Museum of Contemporary Art, Isfahan, Iran
The title of the exhibition has been taken from the acronyms LTR and RTL, which are used to indicate the direction of writing from left to right, or vice versa in information age. This exhibition is curated by Iranian artist/curator Tarlan Rafiee and Yashar Samimi Mofakham and Peter Assmann, Austrian artist/curator and supported by Bread & Salt Projects.
Beyond Boundaries: Art by Email | Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Wakefield, UK
Due to political situations and immigration conditions it can be difficult to invite artists from outside the UK to work at Yorkshire Sculpture Park (YSP). Art by Email brings together the voices of 16 artists from five MENA countries, selected by ArtRole Chief Executive Adalet R. Garmiany and YSP Senior Curator, Dr Helen Pheby, and includes photography, film and performance. An abstract sculpture by the Iranian artist Sahand Hesamiyan, the instructions for which were submitted via email, will be 3D printed during the exhibition.
Variations on a garden | David Roberts Art Foundation, London, UK
variations on a garden is a solo exhibition in DRAF Studio showing, amongst other works, the sculptural installation Study for a Monument(2013–15), the video installation Ghost (2013), excerpted youtube footage of American soldiers returning home to surprise their families which repeatedly fades to white, and the photograph and after and after (2003/8). The domestic sphere has been an ongoing area of research for Akhavan, and recent works have looked at the garden, the backyard and other domesticated landscapes. The garden often operates as a symbolic territory in the division between the commons and the proprietorial, between one nation and another.
Artist in Residence | Atelier Calder, Saché, France
Founded in 1989 by members of the Calder family in collaboration with the Centre national des arts plastiques (CNAP), the Atelier Calder residency program offers artists the opportunity to pursue projects and create new work in the exceptional environment of Alexander Calder's studio and home in Saché, France, designed by the artist himself. The works produced during the residency are presented to the public at the end of the session during an open studio weekend.
Brisasia Festival 2017 | Brisbane, Australia
In 2013, BrisAsia Festival launched as an annual festival showcasing contemporary and traditional Asian arts and cultural events, programs and initiatives. The festival provides professional and creative sector development opportunities for Brisbane-based creatives with a strong interest in the Asia region and whose creative practice is reflective of this. The 2017 program features a variety of free activities to experience Brisbane's diverse Asian communities.
