Faraday Future FF91 set to challenge Tesla
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 07 - 01 - 2017

AMID major financial and management problems, Faraday Future pushed through with the unveiling of the FF91, an electric car that is touted to compete with Tesla, at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2017.
A startup carmaker, Faraday Future, is promising again to have electric cars roll off a new $1 billion assembly line in southern Nevada in 2018.
Tuesday's demonstration at CES had the company's four-door, 1,050-horsepower FF 91 model clocking 0-to-60 mph in just under 2.4 seconds.
Faraday Future officials say the car's battery allows a travel range of up to 378 miles, and a modular design will allow for a faster rollout of future models.
Company executive Nick Sampson didn't say when construction would resume at the factory site, where work was suspended in November. Nevada pledged up to $335 million worth of incentives to attract Gardena, California-based Faraday Future to North Las Vegas.
The FF91 is the first production vehicle from Faraday Future, a Chinese-backed American start-up technology company established in 2014. Built using a Variable Platform Architecture (VPA), the electric car promises to deliver supercar performance, precise handling and the same level of comfort experienced in luxury passenger vehicles. The FF91 is also said to come with innovative and intelligent technologies.
Powered by a multi-motor powertrain that can be mated to an all-wheel drive system, the FF91 has the ability to produce 1050 horsepower. This enables the electric car to go from 0 to 60 miles per hour (mph) in just 2.39 seconds. The 130-kWh battery with class-leading technologies is said to deliver a range of 378 miles. Furthermore, it has fast charge capability so the FF91 can have 500 miles of range with just an hour of charging. Using a 240-volt charger, the vehicle can be fully charged in under 4.5 hours.
In terms of aesthetics, the FF91 features a sleek and aerodynamic design. The rounded front fascia provides a contrast to the angular rear, designed to improve efficiency and range. When it comes to dimensions, the electric car has a wide stance and long wheelbase which translates to spacious interiors.
Inside the cabin, the FF91 features ergonomic reclining seats with massage, heating and ventilation functions. The panoramic roof also comes with smart dimming glass technology. With Faraday Future's partnership with Internet company LeEco, the FF91 gains a unique in-car environment that is able to integrate the user's digital life through personalized apps and content. A notable feature, Arrival Interface, allows drivers and passengers to unlock the car via facial recognition.
When it comes to safety, the FF91 comes with a complex sensor system that includes 3D lidar, 10 high-definition cameras, 13 radars and 12 ultrasonic sensors. It also has the capability for autonomous driving.
The Faraday Future FF91 is expected to arrive in spring 2018. Those interested in pre-ordering the electric car will need to put up a $5,000 fully-refundable deposit. The first 300 orders will be eligible to upgrade their reservation in March 2017 to receive the exclusive Alliance Edition.
