JEDDAH — A Korean Cultural Day, organized here at the weekend by the Korean consulate general, was meant to promote mutual understandings, interchange of personnel and cooperation between Korea and Saudi Arabia. Korean Consul General Nak-Young Oh received guests and reviewed with them the displayed Korean products. Addressing the guests, Oh said: "The event will allow everyone a glimpse of Korea's identity. When wondering about a culture, anyone will find himself or herself drawn to its cuisine. Today, all of you will have a chance to try from a variety of culinary choices that reflects Korea's uniqueness in taste and etiquette." "Folklore is another form of attraction that you shall see today. From customary practices to folk games, Korea is rich in culture, naturally, as a subsequent result of its ancient history. Korean traditional games were devised for leisure and communication with families, friends, relatives and even neighbors. Playing these games helps create bonds between people and serves as a recreational and entertaining channel for all Korean people. Today, you will witness and experience firsthand some of these practices in a compact experience of Korean culture." Oh added The consul general also hoped that the event would allow for further contribution for enriching the cultural diversity of Jeddah, and to satisfy the growing interest for Korean culture. The all-day cultural gathering included a display of Korean cosmetic products. It introduced several key beauty and skincare products and guests had a chance to test them, obtain information and to learn more about one of Korea's most innovative industries. Mohammed Abdulsami, regional travel manager at Kanoo Group, provided a brief introduction about tourism in Korea. A multimedia show about Korea was screened and provided guests more in-depth information about Korea and its culture. At noon guests were invited to Korean cuisine home-made luncheon by wife of the consul general. The luncheon included kimchi (made by fermenting brined Korean cabbage with salt-fermented seafood, red pepper and various seasonings.). Kimchi is a representative Korean dish that never fails to be on the tables of Koreans. It is sour and spicy, yet crispy and refreshing. It is an essential side dish, served without fail on dining tables. Varieties of Kimchi are made from radish, scallion, or cucumber as a main ingredient. Certain studies have related it to cancer prevention. It is very popular as a side dish as well as a healthy snack. It is the excellent source of vitamins A, B12 and C. Guests also had the opportunity to taste Ginseng tea and other different kinds of traditional hot drinks. They also enjoyed many different games throughout Korea's long history. They play these games to communicate and spend time with their family, friends, relatives and even neighbors. Playing these games helped create bonds between players. Today, many games are still played by Koreans and even foreigners. Guests were also extended an opportunity to experience two of the most popular games in Korea, which can be played by any one irrespective of age or gender. Winners of the quiz and games show were awarded interesting prizes.
