It was down by 27 percent, compared to the same quarter in 2015, according to the GfK TEMAX results for the quarter. All sectors suffered with consumer electronics (CE), photography (PH), information technology (IT), and office equipment and consumables (OE), registering double-digit losses. Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: Technical consumer goods – sales value by sector Consumer Electronics During Q3 2016, SR734 million were spent in the Saudi CE market – a fall of 29 percent, compared to Q3 2015. Loudspeakers was the only category to register increased sales, with double-digit growth, compared to the same period last year. All other categories contracted. However, there were some positive indicators in the ultra-high definition (UHD) TVs, game consoles, Bluetooth speakers, and smart audio products segments. Photography In Q3 2016, the PH sector continued its decline and recorded sales of SR70 million — a fall of 41.6 percent, compared to 2015's third quarter. Both the digital cameras and the lenses segments fell – by 42.2 percent and 37.3 percent, respectively. In fact, all camera segments (including single-lens reflex (SLR), mirrorless, and compact cameras) registered double-digit falls. The only segment that continued to grow strongly in Q3 2016 (up by 52.6 percent, compared to Q3 2015) was changeable-lens cameras with Wi-Fi. Major Domestic Appliances The MDA sector in Q3 2016 fell by 1.5 percent, compared to Q3 2015. All categories reported contractions, with the exception of washing machines and dishwashers, both of which saw single-digit growth. Cooling products accounted for 42 percent of the total MDA market value. Models with two doors and freezers on top maintained their leading position. In the washing machines segment, washer/dryers saw the largest growth in Q3 2016. Small Domestic Appliances Sales in the SDA sector declined by 9.6 percent in Q3 2016, compared to 2015's Q3. The revenue generated amounted to SR488 million. Key sales opportunities in Q3 2016 were Eid Al Adha, and the ‘back-to-school' period. Hot beverage makers recorded double-digit growth, driven by espresso machines, and tea makers. There was a positive performance in the hair dryers segment, and air treatment equipment stabilized. Information Technology The KSA's IT market for Q3 2016 was worth SAR1.2 billion – a decline of 28 percent, compared to Q3 2015. Leading IT segments – mobile computing products, mediatablets, and desktop computing products – all contracted and registered double-digit declines, compared to the same period in 2015. However, within the mobile PCs segment, 2-in-1 devices and gaming PCs, reported high, two-digit growth. Also, niche categories (including some storage devices) recorded marginal rises in challenging market conditions. Telecommunications The SDA sector in the KSA fell in Q3 2016 – down by 33.4 percent, compared to the same quarter in 2015. All segments contributed to the decline. Smart/mobile phones, and phablets fell by 33.5 percent and 34 percent, respectively. Headsets were down by 38.4 percent. Core wearables, with growth of 112.2 percent, was the only positive area. A rise fueled by the interest in health and fitness. Office Equipment and Consumables The OE sector faced a challenging third quarter in 2016. Total sales of SR168 million were recorded – a fall of 24.2 percent, compared to Q3 2015. Both the inkjet and laser categories saw double-digit declines. Inkjet multifunctional devices (MFDs) proved to be the most resilient and a key volume driver. The expanding range of CISS (Continuous Ink System) devices helped this category. Finally, both the inkjet cartridges, and laser toners segments recorded large falls in Q3 2016. GfK TEMAX tracks the sales of technical consumer goods across 41 countries.
