Juan Mata swept home to steer Manchester United into the League Cup quarterfinals with a 1-0 win over holder and bitter local rival Manchester City Wednesday as Jose Mourinho got one over old adversary Pep Guardiola. Mata rifled in a low finish past City keeper Willy Caballero early in the second half at Old Trafford on a night of few chances but plenty of derby fervor as United boss Mourinho won the tactical battle against Guardiola's much-changed City side. The result lifted some of the pressure off Mourinho following Sunday's 4-0 defeat to Chelsea, but for his old sparring partner, Guardiola, it was a sixth successive game without victory, his longest winless streak as a manager. West Ham United also moved into the last eight after it overcame Chelsea 2-1 in a London derby spoiled by ugly scenes of fan violence at the end of the game, while Southampton heaped more misery on struggling Sunderland with a 1-0 victory. Recent results and the gathering pressure on both Mourinho and Guardiola ensured the clash at Old Trafford had all the usual spice of a derby encounter even if City made nine changes to their side against a virtually full-strength United team. United offered little attacking threat, but gained control of possession as the match wore on and were the more dangerous side for most of the encounter. Zlatan Ibrahimovic shrugged off a challenge then played the ball back towards Ander Herrera, who went down dramatically in the box but Mata was following up to powerfully steer the ball home. Quarterfinal draw Manchester United was handed a home tie with West Ham United in Wednesday's League Cup quarterfinal draw. In the only other all-Premier League last-eight tie, Southampton will visit Arsenal. Liverpool hosts second-tier Leeds United, while Championship leader Newcastle United visits Hull City. Real on a scoring spree A much-weakened Real Madrid went goal crazy in the Copa del Rey Wednesday, smashing third-division minnow Cultural Leonesa 7-1 away from home in the first leg of their last-32 encounter. Bayern beats Augsburg Holder Bayern Munich scored twice in the first half to beat Augsburg 3-1 in the Bavarian derby and reach the German Cup third round Wednesday. Borussia Dortmund keeper Roman Weidenfeller saved two penalties against Union Berlin to help his team advance 3-0 on spot kicks after the game had finished 1-1 following extra time. Schalke 04 raced to a 3-0 lead against Nuremberg but had to sweat it out for a nervous 3-2 victory after the hosts pulled two goals back in the second half. Hanover 96 scored four goals in the opening 19 minutes to crush Fortuna Duesseldorf 6-1. In other matches was: Greuther Fuerth 2, Mainz 1; Walldorf Astoria FC 1, Darmstadt 0; VfL Wolfsburg 1, Heidenheim 0. Double by Dzeko Edin Dzeko hit his ninth and 10th league goals of the season as Roma stayed in hot pursuit of leader Juventus with a comprehesive 3-1 win at Sassuolo Wednesday. Juventus was given an extra incentive to move further clear of its scudetto rival when AC Milan, who stunned the champion 1-0 last weekend to close the gap to two points, crashed 3-0 at Genoa Tuesday. Juventus underlined its credentials with a classy 4-1 win at home to Sampdoria. Milan dropped to fourth with Lazio moving up one place to fifth after a 4-1 rout of Cagliari. Elsewhere, embattled Inter Milan coach Frank De Boer saw his survival hopes boosted by Mauro Icardi's 88th minute winner in a 2-1 home win over Torino that, nevertheless, saw the nervous Nerazzurri miss chance after chance. — Agencies
