Arab League chief Nabil Elarabi called Thursday on the Syrian government to stop further acts of violence against opposition protesters. In a statement, Al-Arabi said an Arab observer mission was carrying out its work in Syria “under very difficult circumstances.” Syrian security forces stormed Thursday a restive area on the outskirts of the capital Damascus, killing at least two people, activists based in northern Lebanon told dpa. “Sounds of heavy explosions and machine guns are rocking the area of Douma. But ambulances are being prevented from entering the area,” said Ahmed Al-Hamawi, a Syrian activist. He added that at least eight people, including two women, were injured in the attack. Government forces have been carrying out major crackdowns across Syria, including the central provinces of Hama and Homs, since Tuesday.
