A collage of the partial annular solar eclipse as was visible from the roof of the Science Building in the new campus of Jazan University was sent to Saudi Gazette by one of its readers Dr. Fabrizio Pinto, an Assistant Professor, who with Vice President Professor Dr. Ali Al-Kamli, co-directs the Laboratory for Quantum Vacuum Applications in the Department of Physics at Jazan University. He is originally from Los Angeles, California, US. The Department of Physics at Jazan University hosts activities ranging from public outreach at the local shopping malls to a highly technical international physics workshop with experts invited from all over the world ( http://colleges.jazanu.edu.sa/sites/en/sci/physics/Pages/SIMFP2017/index.html ). Today the Moon covered the Sun across large parts of Africa. However, since the moon was slightly farther away than the average, it was not large enough to cover the entire disk. İn Africa this appeared as a "ring of fire" around the black disk of the Moon. In Jazan, the Moon never covered the Sun completely so we only saw a partial eclipse covering about 20% of the disk of the Sun. Dr. Fabrizio said: "These photos were taken with an ordinary Canon 500D, a zoom lens (300 mm) and a Thousand Oaks solar filter in front of the zoom. It is important to never look at the Sun directly or the human eye can be permanently damaged so a filter is always necessary. Never look directly at the Sun."
