Jemima Sumgong made the most of a kick with 6km to run to win Kenya's first ever Olympic women's marathon gold Sunday. Sumgong timed 2hr 24min 04sec for Kenya's first-ever women's marathon gold over the 42km course that finished at Rio's Sambodromo with temperatures hitting 28 degrees Celsius (82F). Just before the finish, a group of protesters carrying banners tried to get over barriers and onto the course. Bahrain claimed only its second medal in any sport when Kenyan-born Eunice Kirwa took silver, 9sec adrift of Sumgong, while defending champion Mare Dibaba of Ethiopia claimed bronze, at 26sec. Brazilian duo Diego Hypolito and Arthur Mariano won silver and bronze respectively. The Brazilians handed the South American country its first medals in the discipline. Hypolito and Mariano burst into tears, embraced and draped themselves in the Brazilian flag as a delighted Rio crowd roared its joy. Japanese superstar Kohei Uchimura's bid for a third gold in Rio following team and all-around titles ended after he hopped off the mat during his routine. He finished fifth. Defending Olympic champion Niccolo Campriani won his second gold of the Games by clinching the men's 50 meter rifle three positions event, making Italy the most successful country in the shooting in Rio with four gold medals. Campriani, a 28-year-old who won the event in London 2012, narrowly defeated Russia's Sergey Kamenskiy who was making his Olympic debut, in the last of the 15 shooting events. France's Alexis Raynaud took the bronze in his first Olympics at the age of 21. Campriani also took the gold in the 10meter air rifle event, making him the only shooter to win two golds in Rio. Italy also won three silver medals. In boxing, Uzbekistan's light-flyweight Hasanboy Dusmatov won the first gold medal when he beat Colombia's Yurberjen Martinez on a unanimous points decision. Martinez took the silver. Losing semifinalists Joahnys Argilagos of Cuba and Nico Hernandez of the United States won the bronze medals. Hernandez's was the first boxing medal for the US men since the 2008 Beijing Games when heavyweight Deontay Wilder also won bronze. In the latest embarrassment to the Southern Hemisphere's first Olympics, the US Olympic Committee said Ryan Lochte and three other American swimmers were robbed by armed men who stopped their taxi hours after the final night of swimming. The Olympics has struggled with a litany of problems as the Games hit its midway point, including empty seats, long lines, stray bullets, the killing of a policeman in a favela, brazen muggings, an attack on a media bus, spotty weather, snarled traffic and green water. Synchronized swimmers were greeted Sunday by clear blue water in the pool after officials worked through the night to replace the murky green water that prompted competitors to dub it "the swamp."
