MANILA — The defending champion San Miguel Beermen had little trouble disposing of sister team Star Hotshots, 109-100, in the 2016 PBA Governors' Cup Sunday night. SMB import Arizona Reid posted a team-high 34 points on top of 11 assists, five steals and four boards with less than two minutes of rest. Back-to-back PBA MVP June Mar Fajardo added 28 points, 13 rebounds, two blocks, two steals, and two assists. Alex Cabagnot finished with 21 markers for the Beermen, who tied the Barangay Ginebra Kings at third to fourth spot in the standings, both with a 3-1 win-loss card. Star fell to 1-3, tying Phoenix at 10th to 11th place in the rankings. After failing to score in Star's last game, James Yap bounced back with a team-high 20 points. The Beermen won despite two players in civilian clothes—Arwind Santos and Gabby Espinas, who were both recovering from knee surgeries. The Beermen led by as many as 20 points but relaxed a bit in the final quarter as the Hotshots came charging back to cut SMB's lead to just 88-83. However, another flurry of SMB baskets finally sent Star crashing down. Phoenix 120, GlobalPort 107 Eugene Phelps debuted in the PBA with a bang, exploding for 52 points to lead the Phoenix Fuel Masters to a 120-107 victory over the GlobalPort Batang Pier. It was the Fuel Masters' first win in four starts while the loss was the fourth straight for the Batang Pier. Phelps, who replaced Marcus Simmons, posted the highest scoring output for a debuting import since Darius Rice scored 56 points for Purefoods in the 2008 Fiesta Conference vs San Miguel Beer, league records show. Not even a cut lip and a broken tooth incurred from a collision with GlobalPort counterpart Mike Glover could stop Phelps from pouring in the points. He shot 18-of-30 from the field and 15-of-21 from the charity stripe, on top of 16 boards and six assists in 38 minutes. Phoenix Asian import Lee Gwan Hee also played with aplomb, finishing with 16 points, while John Wilson added 15, including eight in the final quarter. Willie Wilson returned after being sidelined by a shoulder injury and chipped in 10 points and four boards. Glover and Stanley Pringle led GlobalPort with 27 points apiece while Terrence Romeo added 20 in another sorry defeat. Jones Cup Philippines 104, Chinese Taipei White 80 Philippines-Mighty Sports Apparels completed a sweep of the 2016 William Jones Cup with a 104-80 romp of Chinese Taipei White on Sunday in New Taipei City. Korean Basketball League veteran Dewarick Spencer posted a team-high 27 points, nine rebounds, and three steals as the Philippines handily won the title with an 8-0 win-loss slate. PH-Mighty Sports became the fifth Philippine team to win the Jones Cup title. FIBA Asia Under-18 Philippines 67, India 64 The Philippine national youth basketball team eked out a 67-64 win over India to finish in seventh place in the FIBA Asia Under-18 Championship Sunday in Tehran, Iran. Jolo Mendoza scored 15 points while Fran Yu added 14 points, including the free throws with 38 seconds to play that enabled Batang Gilas to foil a comeback by India. Batang Gilas was relegated to the classification round after losing to South Korea in the quarterfinals.
