Supermarkets won't close at 9 p.m.

DAMMAM — Many sectors have been exempted from the proposed regulation on the closure of shops by 9:00 p.m, according to a source at the Council of Saudi Chambers.
Grocery stores and supermarkets will be allowed to remain open 24/7, the source said.
He said only the retail sector will be made to adhere to 9:00 p.m. closure time.
"The Council of Saudi Chambers has conducted a comprehensive study on the effects the 9:00 p.m. closure of shops will have on Saudization," said the source.
Abdulaziz Al-Tiraiki, a businessman, said he understands the benefits of the early closure of the retail sector.
"The Ministry of Labor and Social Development wants to regulate the sector to organize the employment of Saudis. Setting an early closing time is also a good way to save electricity," said Al-Tiraiki.
He said that the ministry should also consider the needs of the Saudi people. Most people shop during the night as day time is extremely hot.
The recommendation to this effect is expected to be submitted to the Council of Ministers for a final decision.
Saudi Arabia has one of the fastest-growing retail sectors in the world, growing 11 percent per annum with consumer spending up 18 percent, year -on-year, in 2015, according to Arabian Centers, one of the biggest mall operators in the Kingdom.
New retail space in Riyadh is projected to grow by about 45 percent in the next three years to 21.5 million square feet, according to the property company JLL.
