United finishes 5th in EPL
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 19 - 05 - 2016

Manchester United beat Bournemouth 3-1 in an English Premier League game hastily rearranged because of a bomb scare, sealing fifth place and a spot in the Europa League group stage Tuesday.
United was never likely to score the 19 goals needed to finish fourth and qualify for the Champions League, so the aim was to get the win to guarantee an automatic spot in the Europa League and take some momentum into the FA Cup final against Crystal Palace Saturday.
Wayne Rooney scored one goal and played a part in two others. Playing in center midfield, Rooney finished off a well-worked team move in the 43rd minute and delivered key passes in the buildup to goals from Marcus Rashford and Ashley Young.
United defender Chris Smalling scored an own goal in injury time.
There were some jeers from United fans as Van Gaal took to the microphone in the center circle after the game. The Dutchman thanked supporters for their "unconditional support," adding: "Now, we want to bring the FA Cup home to you."
Hull sets up Yorkshire final
Hull City will face Sheffield Wednesday in an all-Yorkshire Championship playoff final after surviving a huge scare in a 2-0 home loss to Derby County in its semifinal second leg Tuesday which left it with a 3-2 aggregate win.
Steve Bruce's Hull side conceded two first-half goals but hung on to secure a place in the May 28 final at Wembley, which will bring a money-spinning spot in the Premier League worth up to 170 million pounds ($245.8 million) for the winner.
Terry signs new Chelsea deal
Chelsea captain John Terry signed a new one-year contract with the Premier League club Wednesday to end speculation he would be forced out of Stamford Bridge.
Terry sparked fears he was on the verge of leaving Chelsea against his will when he claimed in January he hadn't been offered an extension to his contract, which was due to expire in June.
With Italy coach Antonio Conte due to take charge at Stamford Bridge once his Euro 2016 commitments are over, it had been reported Terry could be eased out by the new boss.
But the 35-year-old former England defender was offered the new deal last week and, after speaking to Conte and Blues owner Roman Abramovich, he agreed to extend his 21-year stay with Chelsea by at least another season.
"I am delighted to sign a new contract with the club. Everyone knows I'm Chelsea through and through," Terry told Chelsea's website.
"I am looking forward to next season under the new manager and hopefully we can make it a successful one."
Terry signed for Chelsea at the age of 14 and has made 703 first-team appearances, the third-highest in the club's history, with a club-record 570 of those as captain.
