The Rangers outdid themselves with a 2-1 shootout victory over the Phoenix Coyotes Tuesday at Madison Square Garden. After being stopped by Phoenix goaltender Mike Smith on a penalty shot with 1 minute 50 seconds left in overtime, Marian Gaborik kept the Rangers in the shootout by beating Smith in the third round. Derek Stepan scored in the sixth round, and after Henrik Lundqvist stopped Shane Doan, the Rangers had their 5th consecutive win and 10th in 11 games. “We deserved to win tonight,” Lundqvist said. Islanders 5, Red Wings 1: John Tavares had a goal and assist in the second period, shortly after being struck in the head with a puck, and Evgeni Nabokov made 23 saves as the host Islanders beat the Detroit Red Wings. Tavares left the ice hunched over with a towel pressed to the side of his head less than one minute into the second, after a dump-in by Detroit's Niklas Kronwall hit him. He returned to the bench a few minutes later. Matt Moulson started and finished the outburst with goals for the Islanders, who are 5-0-1 against the Red Wings since the NHL lockout seven years ago. Bruins 5, Jets 3: Nathan Horton's second goal of the game keyed Boston's three-goal third period as the host Bruins beat Winnipeg. Senators 5, Penguins 1: Milan Michalek scored twice, Craig Anderson stopped 29 shots and visiting Ottawa sent the reeling Penguins to their fifth straight loss. Flyers 2, Hurricanes 1: Sean Couturier scored the tiebreaking goal 3 minutes 23 seconds into the third period and Philadelphia won on the road. Blues 3, Canadiens 0: Jaroslav Halak got the shutout in his first game back in Montreal and St. Louis extended its winning streak to four. Maple Leafs 2, Sabres 0: Jonas Gustavsson had 32 saves for his second shutout in three starts and Toronto won at home. Other results: Canucks 5, Lightning 4; Wild 5, Sharks 4; Chicago 5, Columbus 2; Nashville 4, Colorado 1; Calgary 6, New Jersey 3; Anaheim 5, Dallas 2.
