These days, Snapchat is taking the country by storm and people are no longer interested in reading books. Snapchat has millions and millions of users who love to post and look at photos and videos of themselves and others. Our country ranks second in terms of using Snapchat. In fact, Saudis use social media websites more frequently than people in other countries. I have noticed that people who are fans of Snapchat do not like reading and only use the program for fun. This can be seen all over the world. I do not like the fact that most people on Snapchat are attention-seekers. They want to get as many followers as possible just for the sake of it. I feel sad to see many Saudis following suit. My friends and colleagues tell me many stories that I find shocking. I myself saw a Saudi lady videotaping her travel from the Kingdom to the US and posting the videos on Snapchat. The detailed videos showed her packing her bag at her home in Riyadh, going to the airport, getting on an airplane, shopping, etc. She even recorded her husband. I saw a Snapchat video of a Saudi postgraduate student who is a mother of two. She recorded her children, her Western neighbors, her husband and many other things. I do not know why she is recording all of these things and uploading them — she is a postgraduate student and must have papers to write and research to undertake. She also has over one million followers. Sometimes, she records gifts her husband buys her. Frankly speaking, I do not understand why people spend hours and hours capturing moments of their private life and sharing them with others on Snapchat. Recently, I saw a Snapchat video of a rich woman who never stops talking about the advantages of Snapchat. In some of her videos, she said that she was lost before finding Snapchat and that she had a lot of free time in the past and did not know what to do with it. She, however, no longer feels bored thanks to Snapchat. She posts videos of her trips abroad and her spoilt little dogs.
