BAHA — A woman who was kicked out of the house with her six children by her husband, has been fighting for a divorce for seven years, Al-Watan newspaper reported. Umm Abdulrahman said she lived in the village of Huwalah in Baljurashi governorate and was constantly abused by her husband. "I currently live in a house donated to me by a man who just wanted to help. However, the house is in a very poor state and may collapse any moment. We constantly have water leaks when it rains. My husband kicked me and my children out and I provide for the kids all alone," said Umm Abdulrahman. She said she had been trying to get a divorce from her husband for the past seven years. "He prevents me from receiving my social insurance and donations from charities. He refuses to divorce me and let me live in peace. I am 50 now and my eldest child is a girl from a previous marriage. My other five children are from my current marriage. My son is only 10 years old," said Umm Abdulrahman. She said she had been married to her current husband for 23 years. "He is a drug addict and he physically abused me several times. The police are constantly at our doorstep because of the troubles he brings home. I filed for a divorce but every time there is a court hearing he would not attend. He demanded that I give him SR40,000 for obtaining divorce but I do not have such money," said Umm Abdulrahman. She added she also got into a fight with her brothers over the inheritance when their father died. "My father had a small piece of land in a mountainous area. There was no one who was interested to buy the land as construction on it is difficult due to its topology. My brothers made me sign a contract, which compromised my right to the land," said Umm Abdulrahman. Baha Social Affairs Director Ahmad Al-Asmi said the directorate sent a social worker to Umm Abdulrahman to check on her current state. "She receives regular financial aid from the directorate. We will assess her situation to see what else we can offer her," said Al-Asmi.
