The freshman Eli Carter had 19 points and Rutgers beat a top-10 team for the second time this season, upending No. 8 Connecticut, 67-60, Saturday in Coach Jim Calhoun's return from a three-game NCAA suspension. The freshman Myles Mack added 14 points for the host Scarlet Knights (9-7, 1-2 Big East), who beat No. 10 Florida on Dec. 29. It is the second time Rutgers has beaten two top 10 teams in the same season; the Scarlet Knights beat UCLA and West Virginia in 1981-82. “When we pay attention to details and we're communicating, these things can happen,” Rutgers Coach Mike Rice said. The win snapped Connecticut's 10-game winning streak against Rutgers, and it was just the Huskies' second loss in 19 games with the Scarlet Knights. The last time Connecticut (12-3, 2-2) lost to Rutgers was in 2002. “I am incredibly disappointed in how we're playing right now,” Calhoun said. “We're not in sync right now.” Rutgers used a 10-0 run in the second half to take the lead for good.
