Manchester United held off a spirited second-half fight-back by 10-man Manchester City to knock the defending champion out of the FA Cup Sunday with a 3-2 victory that saw Paul Scholes surprisingly come out of retirement. The third-round victory allowed United to exact a measure of revenge on City for a 6-1 rout in the Premier League earlier in the season and for losing to its crosstown rival in last season's FA Cup semifinals. But United manager Alex Ferguson was unhappy with his side's sloppiness after being in complete control by halftime following Wayne Rooney's two headed goals, Danny Welbeck's volley and City having captain Vincent Kompany sent off. “We were 3-0 up at halftime and we thought we were through and they took our foot off the pedal,” Ferguson said. “It was a careless performance in the second half and we should have been home and dry.” Despite United's numerical advantage, a City side aggrieved by Kompany's dismissal for fouling Nani managed to haul itself back in contention with goals from Aleksandar Kolarov and Sergio Aguero. But United clung on in the face of a City onslaught to secure its first away victory in a Manchester derby since Scholes scored the winner in 2010 in the league. The 37-year-old Scholes, who gave away the ball that led to Aguero's 65th minute-goal, announced Sunday morning that he was returning to the squad seven months after retiring, with United in the midst of an injury crisis. “I was surprised, we didn't find out until we got to the dressing room,” Rooney said. “It gave everyone a lift. He's a fantastic player.” United was joined in the fourth round by Chelsea, Sunderland and Sheffield Wednesday. Chelsea routed Portsmouth 4-0 after scoring all four goals in the second half, Sunderland won 2-0 at Peterborough, and Sheffield Wednesday beat West Ham 1-0. At Stamford Bridge, Juan Mata put Chelsea ahead against second-tier side Portsmouth at the start of the second half. Ramires scored twice and Frank Lampard completed the victory in stoppage time against the 2008 FA Cup winners. United draws Liverpool Manchester United has been drawn to face Liverpool in the fourth round of the FA Cup at Anfield in the midst of hostilities between the clubs over racism. Liverpool striker Luis Suarez was banned for eight matches after being found guilty by the English Football Association of racially abusing United defender Patrice Evra during an October Premier League game. Liverpool was unhappy with United's conduct in the case, accusing the English champion of getting a rival's top player banned “without anything beyond an accusation.” Liverpool ousted Oldham Friday in a game that was marred by accusations that an Oldham player was racially abused by fans at Anfield. Chelsea was drawn to face MK Dons or Queens Park Rangers on the weekend of Jan. 28-29. Tottenham Hotspur, eight-time FA Cup winner and the highest ranked team left in the FA Cup behind United, makes the short trip to Championship (second division) Watford. Arsenal will be at home to seven-time winner Aston Villa if it beats Championship side Leeds United at the Emirates Monday night. There could be as many as six all-Premier League matches with Everton hosting Fulham, West Bromwich Albion playing Norwich City and Arsenal playing Villa. Swindon Town, the League One (third division) team which knocked out Premier League Wigan Athletic Saturday, will travel to meet the winner of the all-Championship replay between Nottingham Forest and Leicester City. There will also be an intriguing North East derby between a Sunderland side, rejuvenated by new coach Martin O'Neill, and Championship promotion candidates Middlesbrough. One team from League One will definitely make it into the fifth round (last 16) after Stevenage Borough was drawn against Notts County.
