Baseball's recent change in regulations on breaking up double plays took all of three days to swing the outcome of a game, giving Logan Forsythe and the Tampa Bay Rays a disputed 3-2 victory over Toronto that left Blue Jays manager John Gibbons fuming. "It might be the first game that was a ‘W' because of the double-play rule that's in effect," Forsythe said. "It was wild." With the bases loaded and one out in the ninth inning, Toronto slugger Edwin Encarnacion hit a grounder to third. After taking a throw from Evan Longoria for the force at second, Forsythe made an errant relay to first that appeared to allow the go-ahead run to score for the Blue Jays. Rays manager Kevin Cash asked for a replay review, claiming Jose Bautista violated the new "Chase Utley Rule" governing slides on potential double plays. Replay umpires in New York ruled Bautista's slide was not directly into the bag and it illegally hindered Forsythe. The call was changed to a game-ending double play that preserved Tampa Bay's victory. "I felt something on the slide," Forsythe said. "When I first saw him coming in, I thought he was going over the bag, but then I didn't know if he kicked his foot out to try and catch a back foot. He kind of swung me around a little bit, the throw went a little left." Major League Baseball recently altered the rule on such slides, hoping to prevent a repeat of the takeout by Los Angeles Dodgers second baseman Chase Utley that broke the leg of New York Mets shortstop Ruben Tejada during last year's playoffs. Red Sox 6, Indians 2: David Price struck out 10 in six innings, and Mookie Betts and David Ortiz each belted two-run homers to lead Boston over Cleveland in an Opening Day game. Price allowed two runs, while Cleveland's Corey Kluber gave up four runs in five-plus innings. White Sox 5, Athletics 4: Shortstop Jimmy Rollins hit a go-ahead solo home run with two outs in the top of the ninth inning, and the Chicago White Sox held on for a 5-4 victory against the Oakland A's at the Oakland Coliseum. Rollins lined left-hander Sean Doolittle's 2-2 pitch over the left-center field wall for his first home run with the White Sox. Cubs 6, Angels 1: Jon Lester followed teammate Jake Arrieta's brilliant performance one night earlier with one of his own, pitching seven strong innings to lead the Chicago Cubs to a 6-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels. Arrieta blanked the Angels on two hits through seven innings on Monday, and Lester responded with seven innings himself, holding the Angels to one run on four hits. Lester struck out four and did not walk a batter. Dodgers 3, Padres 0: Scott Kazmir allowed an infield single over six innings as the Los Angeles Dodgers blanked the San Diego Padres 3-0. Through two games in the season-opening series, the Padres have yet to score a run. The Dodgers pitching staff has yield just six hits. Kazmir, in his first game as a National Leaguer, delivered an encore to Clayton Kershaw's stellar performance in a 15-0 win Monday. The 12-year veteran and three-time American League All-Star kept the Padres off balance in notching his first win in three career starts against San Diego. Diamondbacks 11, Rockies 6: Paul Goldschmidt and Jean Segura tripled and homered and Goldschmidt finished a six-run seventh inning with a two-out, three-run triple in the Arizona Diamondbacks' 11-6 victory over the Colorado Rockies at Chase Field. Goldschmidt had four RBIs and Segura had three as the D-backs (1-1) overcame a four-run deficit by scoring the final nine runs, with Segura's two-run triple capping a three-run sixth inning. Other results: Astros 5, Yankees 3; Mets 2, Royals 0; Pirates 6, Cardinals 5 (11 innings); Giants 2, Brewers 1; Tigers 8, Marlins 7 (11 innings); Mariners 10, Rangers 2.
