Holder Sri Lanka fights to avoid World T20 exit
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 26 - 03 - 2016

Holder Sri Lanka faces being dumped out of cricket's World Twenty20 Saturday unless it can overcome an England team desperate for runs to clinch its own spot in the semifinals.
After a stuttering start to its title defense, the islanders will have next to no chance of reaching next week's semis if it loses in New Delhi even though it still has one more game to go.
England, meanwhile, will be hoping the failure by its top-order batsmen in Wednesday's tie against Afghanistan was a mere blip and it can reproduce the swashbuckling form that helped it to a record-breaking victory over South Africa last weekend.
Little has gone right for Sri Lanka of late and it was left reeling by the withdrawal of leading paceman Lasith Malinga at the start of the tournament with injury problems. Its first two matches have included a defeat to the West Indies and a less than convincing victory over Afghanistan. Only one batsman has passed 40 and its fielding has been a shambles.
Angelo Mathews, who replaced Malinga as skipper, said after the West Indies match that "the top order let us down" and the team would work hard on its fielding as it had been "so sloppy."
If the West Indies wins Friday night's match against South Africa, then a defeat for Sri Lanka against England would automatically spell its departure from the tournament.
If South Africa was to win and the Sri Lankans lose Saturday then the holder can only stay in if Afghanistan pulls off an unlikely victory over the Proteas in their final match.
The complicated mathematics mean victory is not only vital for England but it also needs to sharply increase its run-rate.
Moeen Ali was its only batsman to get in the 40s against Afghanistan. England captain Eoin Morgan said he had no particular concerns about his top order, which sparkled against South Africa, but said the team would seek to regain its focus after its stuttering win over the Afghans. "It's very important that between now and the Sri Lanka game that we sit as a group and emphasize what we are trying to do," said Morgan, who hopes to be bolstered by the return of Alex Hales. The opener missed Wednesday's match with a back problem but Morgan was "confident he will be fit" for Saturday.

Sammy to join Afridi at Hampshire
West Indies all-rounder Darren Sammy is to join Hampshire for English domestic cricket's Twenty20 Blast competition, the southern county announced Thursday.
Sammy is currently leading the West Indies in the ongoing World Twenty20 tournament in India and will be available for Hampshire duty until his Caribbean Premier League commitments start in July.
The 32-year-old St Lucian also recently featured in the Pakistan Super League in a team captained by Shahid Afridi, who will be a teammate at Hampshire.
His first match for Hampshire will be against Kent on June 2, the club said in a statement.
