Marion Bartoli left her opponent in tears Tuesday after a 6-0, 6-0 rout in the Hopman Cup put France on the way to victory over Australia. Bartoli needed only 50 minutes to beat Jarmila Gajdosova, finishing off the match with her 12th ace. It was the first shutout at the Hopman Cup since Liz Smylie of Australia was beaten by the same score in 1991 by Swiss opponent Manuela Maleeva-Fragniere. Smylie was doing television commentary for Tuesday's Gajdosova-Bartoli match. Later, Richard Gasquet clinched the victory for France at the eight-team Hopman Cup by beating Lleyton Hewitt 6-2, 5-7, 6-1. Bartoli and Gasquet made it a 3-0 sweep when they beat Gajdosova and Hewitt 6-3, 6-4 in mixed doubles. Spain also won its second match in the competition, beating China 2-1. Spain and France play each other Thursday, with the winner advancing to Saturday's final from Group B. Australia and China have each lost twice. Anabel Medina Garrigues and Fernando Verdasco of Spain beat Li Na and Wu Di 6-0, 6-2 to clinch their earlier victory over China. Verdasco beat Wu 6-3, 6-4 in singles after Li gave the Chinese a 1-0 lead with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Medina Garrigues. Denmark plays Bulgaria and the Czech Republic takes on the United States in Group A play Wednesday, with Denmark and the Czech Republic going for their second straight wins. Kuznetsova wins In Auckland, Russia's Svetlana Kuznetsova beat Alison Riske of the US 6-3, 6-3 in the first round of the ASB Classic Tuesday. In other matches, second-seeded Peng Shuai of China dropped a set before beating French qualifier Aravane Rezai 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, while defending champion Greta Arn of Hungary was beaten 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 by fifth-seeded German Julia Goerges. Roberta Vinci of Italy beat Rebecca Marino of Canada 7-5, 6-4, Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium beat Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-4, and Monica Niculescu of Romania beat American Jamie Hampton 7-6 (1), 6-1.
