Snapchat v/s privacy
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 19 - 02 - 2016

Social media networks, especially snapchat, have been breaking into the privacy and personal lives of people. The wrong use of social media is to blame for this dangerous trend.
Emad bin Rafaa emphasized the need to protect privacy, adding that it is as an essential factor for normal life. "It's the right of an individual to protect some aspects of his/her private life and keep their secrets in order to safeguard his reputation in society," he added.
People would not like others to interfere in their private affairs and they are more cautious about privacy especially with the advancement of modern information technology and revolutionary progress in electronic information services and exchange of digital data.
Mohammed Al-Shahri said Islam has emphasized the right of individuals to protect their privacy. It has prohibited spying into people's privacy and secret matters or follow their faults in order to root out evil intentions.
Majed Al-Shahrani, a students' guide, said misuse of Snapchat has been causing a lot of social problems. Participants in this social media group can see what's happening in all corners of a house. It can find people wherever they are. As a result people's private life is disappearing, he added.
"This is a dangerous indicator. It threatens our social life and makes us vulnerable to problems. We need total privacy for some aspects of our life," he said.
Majed bin Zarib said the social media networks had a positive impact on our lives giving us flexibility to contact others and reducing distances. "At the same time it has created a number of family and social problems," he added.
Reem Al-Qahtani, Noura Abdullah and Nasreen Mohammed have the opinion that most people, especially teenagers have no problem in disclosing their privacy while making use of modern information technology.
"People have a tendency to adopt new developments. Teenagers wanted to show their independence and they have become responsible for their actions."
They believe that they have the right to forward certain secret and confidential photos and video clips. They don't realize now the danger posed by such freedom as it gives individuals a chance to invade their privacy. It also causes social and family problems, Al-Qahtani said.
