Phil Mickelson was poised to strike for a record-tying fifth Pebble Beach Pro Am crown after seizing a two-shot lead Saturday with a third-round 66. Mickelson's six-under effort on the par-72 Pebble Beach Golf Links — one of three courses in use over the first three rounds of the US PGA Tour event - gave him a 54-hole total of 16-under 199. "It's fun to just have a chance going into Sunday," said Mickelson, the five-time major winner who hasn't won a US tour title since lifting the 2013 British Open trophy. As Mickelson was eyeing his chance to match Mark O'Meara's record of five Pebble Beach titles, reigning Masters and US Open champion Jordan Spieth was just happy to be hanging around for the final round. The world No. 1 looked out of sorts all day en route to a two-over par 74 at Pebble Beach for a one-under total of 214, just making the cut. "What a really nice up and down to be able to play on Sunday," said Spieth, who arrived at the 18th right on the projected cut line and drove into the rough. With a tree in play he had to play out to the fairway, but finished with a three-footer for par. Spieth was never able to mount a charge and finished the day with three bogeys and one birdie — no birdies on the back nine. Mickelson's closest pursuer was Japanese veteran Hiroshi Iwata, who carded a three-under 69 on the par-72 Spyglass Hill course for 201. Iwata, who shared the overnight lead with South Korea's Kang Sung, shook off a bogey at his opening hole, the 10th, firing six birdies with three bogeys. Kang shared third place with Sweden's Freddie Jacobson on 202. Kang had three birdies and a bogey in his two-under 70 at Pebble Beach while Jacobson fired a three-under 68 on the par-71 Monterey Peninsula course. Australia's PGA Championship winner Jason Day made a move up the leaderboard with a 68 at Pebble Beach that left him six adrift, calling it "more of an ugly four-under." Lydia Ko wins Unfazed by an earthquake just before she teed off, top-ranked Lydia Ko won the New Zealand Women's Open for the third time in four years Sunday. The magnitude 5.7 quake rattled the area about 10 minutes before Ko began play. She started the round on time and play wasn't interrupted by the quake. Ko closed with a 2-under 70 for a two-stroke victory. The 18-year-old South Korean-born New Zealander finished at 10-under 206 at Clearwater Golf Club. She also won the national championship in 2013 and 2015. England's Felicity Johnson, South Korean amateur Hye Jin Choi and Denmark's Nanna Koerstz Madsen tied for second. Johnson shot 67, Choi 69, and Madsen 70. The event was sanctioned by the Ladies European Tour and Australian Ladies PGA. Langer opens 7-stroke lead Bernhard Langer followed his opening 10-under 62 with a 66 Saturday to increase his lead to seven strokes in the PGA Tour Champions' Chubb Classic at TwinEagles. The 58-year-old German star's lead is the largest in the event after 36 holes. At 16-under 128, he's closing in on the tournament-record 20-under total that he set in 2011 and Kenny Perry matched in 2012. Langer won the event in 2011 and 2013. Langer eagled the par-5 fifth and added birdies on Nos. 5, 6, 16 and 17. Perry and Scott Dunlap were tied for second. Perry had a 67, and Dunlap shot 66. Only a bogey on No. 7 stopped Dunlap's birdie run from Nos. 3-8. He also birdied Nos. 16 and 17. Perry had three birdies and a bogey from Nos. 14-17. — Agencies
