Saudi Gazette Jeddah has been chosen as the first city in the Kingdom to implement a number of strategies that will bring heightened environmental awareness in its schools. Schools which comply with the internationally recognized standards of environmental protection will be labeled as ‘Green Schools'. Students will be taught on how to conserve valuable resources like water, electricity, and fuel. The schools will facilitate the separation, collection, and recycling of garbage by installing specially designed garbage bins for disposal off glass, plastic, and paper, and will be partnering with recycling plants to recycle these reusable materials. The Saudi Environmental Society will also introduce similar workshops in five other cities targeting 300 schools and educating 3,000 teachers. Researchers, specialists, academics, and volunteers from abroad and from within the country will be involved in this environmental friendly programs. On successful implementation the Kingdom's schools will be eligible for inclusion in UNESCO's list of countries that have met the criteria for the ‘Green Schools' worldwide program. Leaders of the Kingdom envision making the country greener by instilling environmental awareness in the youth. Prince Turki Bin Nasser Bin Abdul Aziz, President of the Presidency of Meteorology and Environment, called the Saudi Environmental Society and the Ministry of Education to cooperate and work together toward enhancing and preserving a healthy environment for the future generations. In February, the Saudi Environmental Society plans to organize educational workshops in 60 of Jeddah's schools and enrich the schools' curriculum with environmental awareness subjects.
