Child protection
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 07 - 01 - 2016

I WAS impressed by the new child protection law issued by the Social Affairs Ministry as the law has provisions to jail parents who allow their young children to drive their vehicles and withdraw their right to guardianship.
This law will greatly contribute to reducing road accidents whose victims are mostly children. However, it goes against the new traffic law that allows children aged 16 to get a driving license.
I think the ministry should coordinate with the Traffic Department to prevent 16-year-old children from getting a driving license because it will be a license to death. We have already fixed 18 as the age of puberty after a long debate and that age would make them more mature and civilized.
Providing a secure atmosphere for children is essential to ensure a bright future for them. Children should feel security from the time of pregnancy and the mother makes every effort to protect the health of her fetus. I am sure a mother would not allow his son to drive before 18, fearing his safety.
An individual who fails to live various phases of his life normally would have a disturbed future. Childhood is the most beautiful period of a person's life and it is very short and we should not push our children to shoulder the responsibility of grown-up people.
A happy childhood is the key to a balanced personality.
A few days ago I discussed with my children about their childhood as well as mine. I am thankful to my parents for making my childhood a memorable one. I am trying to provide the same happiness or better than that to my children.
This is the right of children and it is the parents' duty to ensure a happy childhood for them. I was overwhelmed with joy when my teenage son told me: "I have enjoyed all my childhood days with you." This way we can share their happiness and get their appreciation.
One of the main factors that affect a child's happiness is the conflict between his or her father and mother. A wise woman will try to keep her children away from that unhealthy and disturbed atmosphere, fearing about their future. It is unfortunate that many children live in such difficult conditions created by their parents.
Authorities must take necessary measures to ensure the protection of children from family conflicts in order to ensure a secure future for them and help them contribute to their family and nation with confidence. Those who cultivate love will certainly enjoy its fruits while those spreading hatred would undoubtedly suffer from its consequences.
