Blues hold off Canucks
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 18 - 10 - 2015

Alexander Steen had a goal and an assist and the St. Louis Blues held off the Vancouver Canucks 4-3 Friday night.
Jori Lehtera, Robert Bortuzzo and Kyle Brodziak also scored for St. Louis (4-1-0), which has won three straight and was playing its second game in as many nights after beating the Oilers 4-2 in Edmonton Thursday.
Jake Allen stopped 31 shots to get the victory, while Vladimir Tarasenko and Carl Gunnarsson chipped in with two assists each.
Brandon Sutter, with a goal and two assists, Jared McCann and Daniel Sedin scored for Vancouver (3-1-1), which has dropped its only two home games of the young season.
Ryan Miller made 28 saves in taking the loss. The Canucks came in with a perfect 6-0-0 record against the Blues over the last two seasons, and were 9-0-2 in the clubs' last 11 meetings dating back to January 2012, but were down 3-0 midway through the game.
Maple Leafs 6, Blue Jackets 3: The Toronto Maple Leafs, losers of their first three games, recorded a 6-3 win over Columbus at Nationwide Arena for their first victory of the season.
The Blue Jackets are the NHL's only 0-5-0 club. Leo Komarov scored two goals, while Jake Gardiner, James Van Riemsdyk, Nazem Kadri and Joffrey Lupul also tallied for the Maple Leafs.Goaltender James Reimer had 23 saves, earning his first win in four career decisions against the Blue Jackets.
Sharks 2, Devils 1 (SO): Goaltender Martin Jones made 31 saves to lead the San Jose Sharks to a 2-1 shootout win over the New Jersey Devils. Jones set the Sharks' record for consecutive scoreless minutes at 234:39.
He entered the game with a 178:11 shutout streak, only having yielded one goal in his three previous starts. That goal occurred 1:49 into San Jose's season opener, a 5-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings at Staples Center on Oct. 7.
Hurricanes 5, Red Wings 3: Kris Versteeg and Eric Staal each had a goal and two assists to lead the Carolina Hurricanes to their first win of the season, a 5-3 decision over the Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Aren. Brock McGinn got his first career goal in his first NHL game and had an assist, while Justin Faulk and Chris Terry also scored for Carolina. Goaltender Cam Ward made 17 saves.
Jets 3, Flames 1: Winnipeg defenseman Dustin Byfuglien scored a highlight-reel goal with 1:28 left in the third period to spark the Jets to a 3-1 triumph over the Calgary Flamest.
Byfuglien stole the puck on his own side of center, streaked down the left side, deftly slipped the puck through his own legs and bounced it off the boards, picked it up again on the other side of Flames defenseman Dennis Wideman and then snapped it high past goalie Karri Ramo from a bad angle.
Blake Wheeler scored into an empty net at 19:07 to seal the win for Winnipeg (4-1-0).
Avalanche 3, Ducks 0: Swiss goalie Reto Berra earned his second career shutout in his first start of the season as the Colorado Avalanche defeated the Anaheim Ducks 3-0 at the Honda Center.
Berra made 35 saves in his second consecutive appearance. He relieved starter Semyon Varlamov late in the second period of Colorado's 6-2 loss to the Boston Bruins on Wednesday in Denver and stopped all five shots he faced.
The shutout extended Berra's streak of consecutive scoreless minutes to 164 over two seasons. He earned his first shutout on April 9 and has not allowed a goal since Anaheim's Richard Rakell scored at 17:58 of the first period on April 3.
Kings 2, Wild 1 (OT): Anze Kopitar scored his first goal of the season to lift the Los Angeles Kings to a 2-1 overtime victory over the Minnesota Wild at Staples Center.
Kopitar delivered at 2:19 of the extra period, gathering a pass from Tanner Pearson and firing the winner past goaltender Darcy Kuemper as the Kings (1-3-1) ended a three-game skid. Goalie Jonathan Quick stopped 25 of 26 shots for the Kings. — Agencies
