President Barack Obama has nominated a veteran diplomat and former ambassador to Pakistan to be the new US envoy to India. Nancy Powel will replace Timothy J. Roemer who resigned in June. Powell is a former high school teacher who joined the US Foreign Service in 1977. She has served widely in South Asia and Africa including as ambassador to Nepal, Ghana and Uganda. Her stint in Pakistan between 2002-2004 came as the US was first seeking Islamabad's cooperation in fighting al-Qaida and the Taliban after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.
