Saudi designer in the world of fashion

Every year more and more Saudi women are attracted by the glitzy field of fashion design. With a passion for fashion they are keen to put the Saudi stamp on the international fashion world.
However fashion design is no easy life and many obstacles stand in the path of the budding artist.
Okaz/Saudi Gazette caught up with Saudi designer Ghadeer Afghani who revealed that the main obstacle is that the field has been dominated by foreign designers for so long. But she says that with the right mindset, this obstacle can be overcome. “It has only made Saudi designers all the more determined to enhance their position in the world of fashion design.”
However, Afghani believes that more can be done to help Saudi designers, such as granting financial support to participate in global fashion shows. She also thinks the country's media should focus more on the work of Saudi male and female designers.
She also believes that the country is opening up to the creative contributions that women can make.
“Today our society views working women with respect and appreciation because they play an important role in serving their society and families. Women's dedication has contributed to gaining such significance in society.”
So how did Afghani get into the exciting world of fashion design?
“I used to design clothes for myself and found that many women liked my designs. Designing was a beautiful dream. I decided to study fashion design and travel abroad to attend fashion shows, learn about new styles and acquire experience.”
Afghani designed her first collection for her relatives and friends in 2004. This led to a growing stream of customers and in 2005 she decided to open up her own boutique. However, she admits it wasn't all plain sailing. “Any working woman finds obstacles in her life which might force her to neglect her husband and children and even herself. However, a smart woman should overcome such difficulties by managing her time well.”
Afghani did just that by marrying when she finished high school before going on to complete her undergraduate studies. Today she is the proud mother of four children. She says she did not have any difficulty managing the role of mother and that of fashion designer, and that her children's performance at school is outstanding.
So what is Afghani's secret for success for Saudi women?
“My advice to all girls is the same advice I give to my daughters. Work hard, manage your time well, memorize and understand the Holy Qur'an and learn a new language. For women, I say work hard and develop yourself and don't forget your duties towards your Lord and family. These are the ingredients of happiness.” __
