With most local and international environmental studies classifying Jeddah as one of the world's most polluted cities, the mayoralty has come up with a new plan to remedy this situation. The plan includes setting up a chain of recycling plants in the southern, eastern, western and northern parts of the city to help make Jeddah more environmentally-friendly. The plants will be able to sort out all types of waste including paper, cardboard, textiles, wood, metal, plastics, building materials, bricks, rubble and soil. Another measure taken by the mayoralty, as part of its facelift for the Bride of the Sea, is to divide the city into nine zones and to appoint one cleaning company per zone. Previously only one or two companies were awarded cleaning contracts for the entire city. The mayoralty found that the old contracting system was mainly responsible for the accumulation of waste in most of the city's districts. The mayoralty believes it will be able to monitor cleaning more effectively under the new system and also ensure the city is cleared of disease-carrying insects and rodents. The mayoralty has introduced this measure because it conducted an in-depth study showing the city's population has expanded threefold. __
