The Saudi Educational Attaché in Britain, Dr. Ghazi Abdul Wahid Makki, announced that 1,110 students who had been studying at their own expense were granted scholarships by the Ministry of Higher Education during the first half of 2008. He also noted that 2,100 Saudi scholarship students had arrived in Britain and Ireland during the same period. Regarding the monitoring of student performance, Dr. Ghazi told Arabic daily Al-Watan that 508 performance reports had been requested and 125 scholarship upgrade applications had been filed for students who wished to extend their scholarships in order to pursue higher studies. Scholarship extension requests were also filed by 565 students who had not received their certificates, or had not completed their English courses on time.
