Rabwa District 3 say their neighborhood has become a breeding ground for disease-carrying rodents and insects because a large piece of undeveloped land in the area is being used as a garbage dump. They claimed to have told the city authorities several times over many years to clear the area, but nothing has been done. They said the foul odors from the garbage have affected several children especially those already suffering from chest allergies. Resident Abdul Aziz Al-Salmi said most of the people in the district have deserted their flats and moved to other areas because of the unhealthy conditions. He said the district has become a hub for infectious diseases including malaria and dengue fever. Leftover food dumped in the area has attracted rodents and stray dogs and cats. Abdullah Al-Qaisy, another resident, said the garbage dump adjacent to the district has caused several health problems for people living in the neighborhood, particularly children. “Those who are responsible for this problem should be held accountable. It's normal to see big fat rats chasing the children in broad daylight.” He said the rats and other animals, including pet hamsters and gerbils, can carry many diseases such as hantavirus, leptospirosis and salmonella. “They also cause considerable property damage by chewing through wiring in homes, car engines and other places.” Yahyia Attyia claimed that he asked officials several times to take action. They made promises but nothing was done, he said. Khalf Al-Ottaibi said families have stopped visiting each other because of the stray animals and big rats. “No one dares to go out after 6 P.M. The problem is getting worse and the officials are turning a blind eye to the problem.” Ahmad Hamza, Head of the Airport Municipality, said Rabwa 3 and other districts are cleaned regularly. He said a team has inspected the area and action will be taken soon to solve the situation. __
