Kumar Sangakkara hit his eighth double hundred and Prasanna Jayawardene notched up a fighting century to thwart Pakistan's hopes of victory to salvage a draw for Sri Lanka in the first Test here Saturday. Sangakkara scored 211 during a marathon near eleven-hour stay while Prasanna made 120, for his fourth century, as Sri Lanka piled on 483 to frustrate Pakistan on the fifth and final day at Abu Dhabi stadium. A cluster of wickets in the final session with Umar Gul taking 4-64 left Pakistan with an improbable target of making 170 in a maximum 20 overs, but it called it quits on 21-1 after 10 overs. The second Test starts in Dubai on Oct. 26. Play called off in Bangladesh In Bangladesh, the second day's play in the first Test between Bangladesh and West Indies at Chittagong was called off Saturday due to heavy overnight rain that left the outfield damp. The match referee and umpires made the decision after an inspection at 1100 local (0500 GMT) time. Play will resume 30 minutes earlier than scheduled Sunday at 0900. Bangladesh was on 255-4 at the close of day one after winning the toss and batting first, with captain Mushfiqur Rahim unbeaten on 68. NZ beats Zimbabwe In Zimbabwe, Martin Guptill smashed 105 to steer New Zealand to a four-wicket win over Zimbabwe in the second ODI Saturday. Guptill faced 121 balls and cracked nine boundaries as the Kiwis overhauled Zimbabwe's total of 259-8 to clinch the three match ODI series. New Zealand finished on 261-6 off 48.2 overs. Guptill put on a 157-run second wicket partnership with Brendon McCullum (87), aided by dropped catches from Zimbabwe. Earlier, Zimbabwe captain Brendan Taylor scored an undefeated 107 to become the first Zimbabwean to score back-to-back hundreds in international cricket. The third and final one-dayer is Tuesday at Bulwayo.
