Napoli shot to the top of Serie A with a controversial 3-0 win over 10-man Inter Milan at the San Siro Saturday as Claudio Ranieri suffered his first defeat in charge and was sent off at halftime. After an end-to-end start the game turned dramatically on an incident four minutes before the break when Joel Obi was handed a second booking for bundling over Christian Maggio on the edge of the box. Julio Cesar saved Marek Hamsik's resulting penalty but defender Hugo Campagnaro followed up to give Napoli the lead. Ranieri was sent off at halftime for remonstrating with the officials as the teams trooped off. In a more subdued second period wing back Maggio added a second goal on 57 minutes, lifting the ball over Julio Cesar, before Hamsik slotted home a third with a quarter of an hour to go to seal Napoli's first victory at the San Siro in 17 years. Roma defeated Atalanta 3-1 earlier Saturday. In the early game Sunday Argentine midfielder Alejandro Gomez scored an injury-time equalizer as Catania drew 3-3 at newly promoted Novara. Other results: Cesena 0, Chievo Verona 0; Fiorentina 1, Lazio 2; Lecce 0, Cagliari 2; Palermo 2, Siena 0; Parma 3, Genoa 1; Udinese 2, Bologna 0. Levante edges Real Betis A first-half goal by Juanlu gave Levante a 1-0 win at Real Betis Sunday in a match between two surprise early pacesetters in the Spanish league. Levante now leads the league with 14 points — one ahead of Malaga and Valencia, which both had wins Saturday. Newly promoted Betis started the weekend as league leader but remained on 12 points after its first home defeat of the season. Sevilla also moved to 12 points after a scoreless draw at Atletico Madrid. Earlier, Fernando Llorente scored a goal in each half to give Athletic Bilbao a 2-1 win at Real Sociedad for its first league victory of the season at the sixth attempt. Jose Antonio Reyes had a clear opportunity to break the deadlock for Atletico against Sevilla, but curled his shot wide despite having time and space, 12 meters out. The draw left Atletico in midtable with eight points. In Saturday's results, it was: Racing Santander 1, Rayo Vallecano 1; Villarreal 2, Zaragoza 2; Osasuna 2, Mallorca 2; Valencia 1, Granada 0 and Malaga 3, Getafe 2.
