The Traffic Department has disclosed that 700,000 motorists violated traffic regulations by using their mobiles while driving during the period from Dec. 7, 2010 to Sept. 28, 2011. The traffic reports, which cover the entire Kingdom, showed that 30,000 motorists exceeded the speed limit, jumped red traffic lights and had used their vehicles to perform stunts such as drifting. The majority of violators were youths from various regions of the country. Reports issued by some traffic departments showed that the average driving speed has decreased by 12 percent compared to the same period last year due to Traffic Department campaigns to book violators. The same reports disclosed that a number of reckless drivers, five percent of violators, crossed red traffic lights.
