Candidates running for municipal councils have been warned against promising to do things beyond their capabilities and responsibilities. “Any candidate claiming that he will do something that does not fall under his responsibility, such as an end to unemployment problem or spinsterhood, could be barred from the election,” Dhaifallah Al-Otaibi, Mayor of the Eastern Province, was quoted by Al-Madina Arabic newspaper as saying at the weekend. “It is against the law to do such a thing and any violator will be reported to the Committee of Challenges to look into the violation and decide if the candidate should be excluded.” The election process is controlled and overseen by lawyers, engineers and other competent authorities, Mayor Al-Otaibi added. Some candidates excluded from the final list of candidates in the Eastern Province elections have filed complaints with the Bureau of Grievances.
