The PGA Tour has canceled Sunday's scheduled play at The Barclays and reduced the opening tournament of the FedExCup playoffs to 54 holes due to safety concerns surrounding Hurricane Irene. The Barclays will now conclude at the end of Saturday's third round at Plainfield Country Club. Hurricane-fueled storms are expected to hit the area late Saturday.Tournament director Slugger White said that if the storms arrive earlier than expected Saturday and they are not able to complete the third round, they would revert to the 36-hole leaderboard to declare a winner and points that players carry over to next week's Deutsche Bank Championship in Boston. Defending champion Matt Kuchar fired a flawless six-under-par 65 to maintain a one-stroke lead midway through the second round of the Barclays at Plainfield Country Club Friday. Kuchar returned early Friday to complete a weather-shortened first round and pushed into the lead with a birdie at the par-four 18th for 63. Fueled by a sense of urgency, Kuchar coolly carded three birdies on each side as he turned right around to play his second round. “It's great being defending champion,” said Kuchar, who stood at 14-under-par 128. Long-hitting American Dustin Johnson followed a first-round 66 with an eight-under 63 to hold second place on 129.Tied at 10-under-par 132 were Briton Justin Rose, Australian Aaron Baddeley and three-time major champion Padraig Harrington of Ireland. Rose shot a second-round 65 while Baddeley posted 66 and Harrington registered 67. Unheralded American Harrison Frazar, the overnight leader in the clubhouse after his 64 Thursday, continued to take advantage of the rain-softened greens with four birdies over his first eight holes to reach 11 under par.Garrido snatches lead at Gleneagles In Scotland, Ignacio Garrido broke away from a pack of frontrunners with a late birdie to take the outright lead after the second round of the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles Friday. The 39-year-old Spaniard rolled in his fifth birdie of the day at the par-3 No. 17 to post a 3-under 69, with his 8-under total leaving him a shot clear of a group of five players that included rejuvenated Dane Thomas Bjorn (69). A member of Europe's 1997 Ryder Cup team, Garrido's finest hour on a personal level came in 2003 when he won the PGA Championship at Wentworth — his second tour title. He has had a modest season to date, save for a fifth place at the Irish Open. Overnight leader Mark Foster (71) was among the players level with Bjorn.Miyazato shares lead In Montreal, Ai Miyazato and Pernilla Lindberg fired seven-under 65s on soggy greens Thursday to share the lead in the Canadian Women's Open, with crowd favorite Samantha Richdale of Canada a shot back. Defending champion Michelle Wie was two shots adrift after shooting a five under 67 at the Hillsdale Gold Club course just outside of Montreal.Richdale opened with a 66 and another stroke back was Angela Stanford, Jenny Shin and South Korea's Kim Mi-hyun. Wie rolled in a 60-foot birdie putt on the par-five fifth hole. She also closed with a 45-foot putt for birdie on her final hole.
