In an unprecedented move, the Consumer Protection Association (CPA) will be organizing a boycott of certain products to force companies to reduce prices. The campaign is entitled “You Leave It”. A Boycott Council, to be the voice of the consumer, will be formed to work out how the campaign will be run. It will include representatives from civil society and the Shoura Council, according to a report in Al-Watan Arabic daily. Dr. Naser Al-Tweam, the CPA President, made the announcement at a press conference on Tuesday. He said the campaign will complement the CPA's 70 programs launched recently. “This program follows in the footsteps of the Second Caliph Omar Ibn Al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, who chalked out the golden principle of ‘You leave it'. This happened when people came to complain to him about high meat prices. He told them to ‘leave it'. This was meant to force prices down.” He said this initiative follows the letter and spirit of the King's Royal Order issued earlier this year. The order stressed the importance of developing a culture of fairness, and preventing price tampering and commercial fraud. He said the campaign will be expanded to include a boycott of fake products and every individual who exploits consumers.
