yr-old house collapses in YanbuYANBU – A 200-year-old house in the coastal city of Yanbu collapsed Saturday. No casualties were reported. An old-time resident said that the collapse of such houses is caused by environmental factors – rain and wind — in addition to excavations by modern vehicles which causes cracks in the structures, a report in Al-Hayat Arabic newspaper said. The Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities (SCTA) previously launched the “Don't Let It Fall” program aimed at involving local communities in preserving heritage buildings that represent a record of Saudi Arabia's history. The plan is to show how people lived in those days. The commission aimed to raise awareness, especially among the younger generation, on the importance of preserving ancient buildings and antiquities. The number of participants at the commission's training program, which was carried out in cooperation with the Technical and Vocational Training Corporation, reflected the awareness of residents of ancient sites. This would help these communities benefit culturally and economically from archeological sites. In recent building collapse incidents in Yanbu six people died and two were injured while they were working on an expansion project of Yanbu Industrial College. Similarly, ten Asian workers suffered injuries of varying degrees when a college building under construction collapsed.
