The price of powdered milk has gone up by eight to 12 percent hitting a new high. The price of a 400-gram tin has reached SR20 for the first time; a 900g tin is now sold for SR35 to SR38 compared to SR32 only a few months ago; and 1,800g and 2,500g tins are now sold for SR55 and SR75 respectively. Some consumers expressed their resentment at the hike in the price of imported powdered milk, especially products imported from Europe. Despite the “good reputation” of these products, they said they would search for an alternative made in Saudi Arabia or a Gulf country, adding that they are looking for a product which would cost no more than SR16 for a small tin. Abdulrahman Al-Saadi, Marketing Director at a food-importing company, said the rise in prices was expected given the increasing use of powdered milk as an alternative to fresh milk in the making of Ramadan desserts.
