Modernization and renovation work at the southern hall of King Abdul Aziz International Airport (KAIA) is in full swing ahead of next week's inauguration by Prince Khaled Al-Faisal, Emir of Makkah Province. Almost 90 percent of the installations and facilities of the southern hall building is already over. The hall consists of two levels – as a waiting area of the passengers and for conveyor belt for both domestic and international flights. Engineer Mazen Khashokji, Director of King Abdul Aziz International Airport, said the old airline counters have been dismantled and replaced by new ones. With the addition of 10 more such counters the number has now come to 56. Two counters equipped with scales have been installed to process large-size luggage, he added. A new conveyor belt system has been installed behind the counters. Some 1,300 high quality seats have been installed for passengers in the departure lounge, Okaz reported. A new automatic passenger announcement system and illuminated guiding signs will help the smooth flow of passengers and upgrade the quality of services. The mezzanine section has also completely been overhaul. It accommodates counters for ticket sale, reservations, airline offices, and a large prayer area. New sophisticated conveyor belts have been installed to process luggage coming from the underground area. Khashokji added that improvement and renovation works will continue after the inauguration until such time as the southern hall is fully operational. __
